Anime Review: Clevatess Episodes 1 - 4 (Spoiler Free)

Clevatess is a dark fantasy anime series based on the manga "Clevatess: The King of Magical Beasts, the Baby, and the Corpse Hero," written and illustrated by Yuji Iwahara, serialized on the Line Manga service by Line Digital Frontier in August 2020. In April 2024, the original manga was also serialized on Media Factory's Comic Alive+ website. The TV anime adaptation is produced by animation studio Lay-duce.
The anime revolves around Demon King Clevatess, who kills a group of heroes that attacked his lands and destroys their kingdom as an act of revenge. He then adopts a humanoid baby linked to the royal family of the kingdom, already in ruins. Clevatess revives one of the fallen heroes to be his slave and help raise the fading world's last hope.
From the get-go, Clevatess is a serious, grim, dark anime filled with blood and gore. Its premiere episode already gave a glimpse of the Demon King's struggles to understand the general populace while trying to keep track of his goals. The revived hero, on the other hand, has other plans in mind, which are evident in the next three episodes.
Although Clevatess has rather grim and dark visuals, it has a very compelling story that makes you look forward to the next episode. The fight scenes in the anime are well-animated, especially in episodes 3 and 4. Animation studio Lay-duce did an incredible job on the anime. No details were compromised in each of the cuts.
Fans of the original manga won't be disappointed with the TV anime adaptation of Clevatess. Those looking for a new anime this summer that is story-driven, Clevatess is definitely a must-watch and binge-worthy series.
Clevatess is now streaming on Crunchyroll with new episodes every Wednesday.
