Filipino comic book cover artist Justine Frany will announce a new publisher at Super Manila Comic Con on Saturday, September 7. She has worked for comic book publications such as DC, Image, IDW Publishing, Dark Horse, and Boom! Studios.

Her colorful art has graced the covers of well-known titles including Boom! Studios' Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Magic: The Gathering, Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal, Dynamite's Red Sonja, Vampirella, Deja Thoris, Punchline, Poison Ivy, and Miracle Molly for DC Comics, just to name a few.

Frany will be on the Main Stage of Super Manila Comic Con for the special announcement this Saturday.

Art posted on social media got her discovered by a talent scout from Singapore

Frany began doing commissions after graduating from college. In 2016, she got a request for a Wonder Woman commission via social media. She was then discovered by a talent scout from Singapore, who eventually became her art representative.

"Sa social media, nung gumawa lang ako ng commission ng wonder woman, and then parang doon na ako na-scout ng talent agent sa Singapore," Frany said in an interview from last year's Super Manila Comic Con at Ayala Malls Circuit Makati. "So yung first commission ko ng wonder woman, kinuha na niya and then ni-recruit na niya ako sa team nila, tapos yun na ang rerepresent sa akin, art representative sa Singapore."

"I think around 2016, 2017, sunod sunod na yung mga commissions ko muna, mostly yung mga international na, dun na nagstart. And then nung nag build up na yung mga artworks ko as a portfolio, dun na ako na discover ng ibang mga publishing companies," she added.

Having built an incredible art portfolio thanks to outpouring commissions and her Singaporean art agent, Frany landed her first officially published cover art of Die issue number one for Image Comics in 2018. After that, she had another cover art gig, this time for DC, and then eventually she was recruited by Boom! Studios to be their full-time cover artist.

"Yung first publishing company na official released published work ko sa Image publishing, Die issue number 1," the Filipino cover artist recalled. "Nag start na siya doon, sumunod na yung, like, sa DC actually, crossover siya ng IDW [Publishing] and DC. Yung Sandman x Locke & Key [Locke & Key/The Sandman Universe: Hell & Gone issue number 1], yun yung first DC ko, and then sunod sunod na."

"Then, ni-recruit na ako sa Boom! Studios. Doon ako nag stay talaga ng matagal. Talagang binigyan nila ako ng contract, yun yung first ever contract ko na full-time talaga, as a comic artist," she added.

Super Manila Comic Con is happening on September 7 & 8 at The Space at One Ayala Mall in Makati, City.
